The end of summer is upon us and my summer
blog coverage was spotty
at best, but we have one last hopefully glorious bacchanal to check
out before the schools open and the dreaded Oscar season bloom into
full treacle.
As a tribute to the talented boys of Broken Lizard, and their upcoming
Beerfest, I thought my summer review would best be done with a cold
brew in one hand, a copy of The Joy of Mixology in the other, and I
won’t even mention what
I’m typing with.
So here is the ReelChange Blockbuster Bar Exam for the Summer of 2006 be sure
to mix up the appropriate beverage if you have to play catch up.

Mission: Impossible 3
 |
Vodka Shot
Ice Cold Shot of Vodka.
Slam as fast as possible.
|
It’s not a bad way to start
a night of drinking or a summer movie season, but it’s
generic, it’s flavorless, and it’s easily forgotten.

Bourbon Flip*
2 oz Bourbon
1 Egg
1 tsp superfine Sugar
1/2 oz Light cream
1/8 tsp grated Nutmeg
Mixing instructions:
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes,
combine the bourbon, egg, sugar, and cream. Shake well. Strain
into a sour glass and garnish with the nutmeg.

This recipe is more than a bit out of date in style and easy
to screw up.
It’s not so much that it’s unenjoyable,
but it doesn’t go down easy, and it might leave an odd
taste in your mouth.

1 part Rum
1 part Gin
1 part Triple sec
1 1/2 part Sour mix
1 splash Coca-Cola

lemon.

Precisely measured and moderated,
it might appeal to the inexperienced or those out of practice,
but it’s more than a little artificial and way too much
work for those charged with making it.

X-Men: The Last Stand

|
Vodka Martini*
1 1/2 oz Vodka
3/4 oz Dry Vermouth
1 Olive
Mixing instructions:
Shake the vodka and vermouth together with
a number of ice cubes, strain into a cocktail glass, add the
olive and serve.

Not really what the title sells it
as, but still a serviceable diversion. Interesting what substituting
one signature ingredient for a much more bland one will do for
a cocktail
. . . or a film.
